At the 7th World Petroleum Congress in Mexico City in April of 1967, AJ Hoiberg presented a paper entitled “Advances in Uses of Petroleum Products in Building Materials and Coatings”. In that paper he described the “direct usage of petroleum products in building materials and allied fields, including waterproofing and coatings”. Throughout the years, petroleum products have contributed substantially and directly to all the basic aspects of a physical structure – utility, aesthetics, and weatherproofing. The physical appearance and chemical recipes may have changed in the last fifty-five years, but the contribution of petroleum remains a critical element in the world of construction.
