Paralympics – 2021

On 29 July 1948, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann organized the first competition for wheelchair athletes which he named the Stoke Mandeville Games, a milestone in Paralympic history. The games later became the Paralympic Games which first took place in Rome, Italy in 1960. Since 1960 the development of prosthetic limbs has progressed rapidly, and in most recent times breakthroughs in the oil, natural gas, and healthcare industries have resulted in a powerful combination of petroleum-based materials, artificial intelligence, and biomedicine to provide greater mobility, comfort, and opportunity for their users. Durable lightweight resins derived from natural gas and oil now form an integral part of a new generation of prosthetic limbs – allowing athletes to go farther and faster at the Tokyo Games this summer. #fossilfueled
